Streamsong: An Unparalleled Golf Experience in Florida

Wegolf 14 Sep 2021

Considered one of the best golf resorts in the USA, it features three 18-hole courses and is located an hour and a half from Orlando.

For over 100 years, the land where Streamsong Resort now stands functioned as a phosphate mine. In fact, to this day, the areas surrounding the resort’s three courses still house mines for this type of fertilizer. When driving along the road toward Streamsong, it is difficult to imagine that you will find a resort of such magnitude.

Tampa (60 minutes) and Orlando (90 minutes) are the two major Florida cities closest to Streamsong. This means the trip is short and the destination can easily be combined with a few days in either of these two cities.

Upon arriving at Streamsong, the first thing you see is the imposing modern-style hotel, which features over 220 rooms.

The hotel has several restaurants with an extensive culinary menu.

The clubhouse shared by the Red and Blue courses features a lodge with 12 rooms reserved for groups of friends who prefer an exclusive stay. Amenities include a billiard table, numerous TV screens, a bar, and a card table.

With three 18-hole courses, Streamsong is the perfect destination for a golf trip with friends. The Blue (Tom Doak) and Red (Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw) were the first two courses to open in 2014. A few years later, the Black course, designed by Gil Hanse, was added.

The Black Course is the newest of the three at the resort, inaugurated in 2017. The greens feature significant movement and demand great creativity with the putter.

The golf style at Streamsong reflects the type of design many architects strive to implement today: eco-friendly courses with lower maintenance costs. Surrounded by waste areas, utilizing the same grass variety for tees, fairways, and greens, and offering many tee options to make holes more versatile. Similar courses include Pinehurst #2, Olympic Golf Course, Bandon Dunes, Chambers Bay, and even Termas de Río Hondo GC.

The Streamsong experience is hard to compare to any other resort—perhaps only Bandon Dunes in Oregon comes close. Golf is practically the only activity (though you can also fish, visit the spa, try archery, or go clay shooting). Streamsong is designed so that the stay for golfers is a 100% golf experience.

Except for the extremely hot summer months, the rest of the year is played walking on all three courses: using a push cart, carrying the bag, or with a caddie (there are many). Carts are generally not used because it is believed the round is not enjoyed as much that way.

The three courses are filled with dunes, and the soil is very sandy due to the natural characteristics of the area. The fact that it functioned as a phosphate mine makes it a place with spectacular conditions for the development of flora and fauna. All three demand a creative style of golf. Due to the sandy soil and grass cut tight to the ground, playing along the ground and using the many slopes around the greens is often a necessity.

Blue Course

Impressive, fun, and original. This modern Tom Doak creation with spacious fairways, undulating greens, and vast white sand areas presents spectacular shots at every turn, made even more challenging by the frequent winds. It is truly a unique experience in a dreamlike setting. Perhaps that’s why it is ranked in the TOP 10 best courses in Florida.

Red Course

This is the highest-ranked of the three Streamsong courses and sits within the TOP 3 in Florida. This Coore-Crenshaw masterpiece is characterized by its elevation changes, holes of varying lengths, and greens that take on very diverse shapes. Throughout the layout, natural water features appear alongside rich fauna and the white sand dunes characteristic of this former phosphate mine.

Black Course

Opened in September 2017, this is the final of the three Streamsong Resort courses. It features a cutting-edge Gil Hanse design marked by massive greens that are consistently firm and fast.

The best time to visit Streamsong is in the fall (September to December) or spring (March to June) in the U.S., as it is not as hot as the summer. It is undoubtedly a resort worth visiting, especially with a group of friends on a golf trip.
