How can you play at Augusta National?

Wegolf 13 Sep 2022

Augusta National Golf Club is one of the most exclusive golf clubs in the world. This Alister MacKenzie design and annual home of The Masters is probably the most famous golf course among players. Stepping foot on ANGC is a dream, but playing it is even more so.

- Become a member of Augusta National Golf Club. It is public knowledge that ANGC is one of the most exclusive clubs with only about 300 members. Applications are not accepted; it is by invitation only.

- Invitation from a member. Very few are lucky enough to have a friend or close contact who is a member. But members have the opportunity to extend invitations a few times a year.

- Qualify to play The Masters. There are nearly 20 ways to qualify for the first Major of the year. For example, being in the top 50 of the world rankings at year-end or winning a PGA Tour event that awards at least 500 FedEx Cup points.

- Cover The Masters as press and win the lottery. Accredited media members (usually from large outlets) participate in a lottery during Masters week. About 20 people get the chance to play the course on the Monday after the tournament.

- Be a member of Augusta Country Club. This is the course located right next to ANGC. Augusta Country Club members have priority to play at ANGC if a player fails to show or if they need to fill spots in the playing lines.

- Be part of a nearby University golf team. Teams from universities like Georgia Tech, University of Georgia, and Augusta State can play at Augusta National once a year. This is no easy feat as these are high-level NCAA Division I teams.

- Invitation from a former champion. Former Masters champions have lifetime playing privileges. They can also invite a friend or family member to play Augusta National on the Sunday before the tournament begins.

- Masters Volunteer. It is difficult to become a volunteer as spots are limited and usually held by the same people for years. But if you are one, you get to play ANGC the following month.

- Write a book on Augusta National. While not many books are officially approved by ANGC, those authorized authors may get the chance to play occasionally to continue their research on the tournament and the club.

- Caddie at ANGC. It is very difficult to apply and pass the rigorous tests to work for Caddie Masters Enterprises Inc. (which manages ANGC caddies). However, those who do can play the course once a year.

- Club Employee. ANGC constantly looks for new employees and usually posts vacancies in the Augusta Chronicle. Employees get the opportunity to play the course once a year.

- Win the Robert T. Jones Jr. Scholarship. Emory University, Queen's University, University of Western Ontario, and Georgia Tech select 4 graduates to study for a year at the University of St. Andrews. These scholars can then play at Augusta National.

- Be a top amateur female golfer. 2019 saw the first edition of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur (ANWA), bringing together 60 of the best amateurs in the world. The final round is played at ANGC the Saturday before the Masters, but all players get a practice round there on Friday.
