Why Choose the Costa del Sol (Spain) for Your Next Golf Trip?
1) The golf courses.
On the Costa del Sol, in the south of Spain, there is a large number and wide variety of golf courses, many of excellent level. Almost all are private courses (but they accept non-members), where the state of maintenance is usually excellent. The level of demand from the members of these clubs is very high, hence the condition of all the courses. Some are closer to the sea with spectacular views, such as the two La Hacienda courses: Heathland and Links. Others are located more in the mountains and consequently have much more elevation change, like La Reserva Club Sotogrande or Finca Cortesín (host of the prestigious 2023 Solheim Cup). And many of these clubs are very old and have very picturesque clubhouses. Among all these courses, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande and, of course, Real Club Valderrama stand out, host of the 1997 Ryder Cup and current host on the LIV Golf calendar. A course with much movement, with holes making their way through the trees (mostly cork oaks), narrow fairways, plenty of rough, and small greens. A true test for golfers.
Finca Cortesín, one of the "gems" of the destination and a must-visit.
2) The climate: 320 days of sunshine a year.
Climate is undoubtedly an important factor when choosing the Costa del Sol as a destination for a golf trip. It is an area where it rains very little and where, as its name suggests, the sun shines practically every day of the year. You play in a T-shirt, without layers, and usually in electric carts. Therefore, the physical wear is minimal. It is a very comfortable trip suitable for all ages.
3) The food, of course.
We know that in Spain, eating abundantly and deliciously is guaranteed. From their famous potato omelets (tortillas) to seafood, fresh fish, and the exquisite Iberian ham. All these spectacular products can be eaten in restaurants or bought in supermarkets if you are staying in houses. What better way to close a day of golf than with an excellent meal surrounded by friends or family?
Paella, potato tortilla, and Iberian ham are some of the "classic" and exquisite Spanish dishes.
4) Proximity of Accommodation to Courses
No matter where you stay on the Costa del Sol, the best golf courses are close by. They can be from 5 minutes to 20 minutes away by car. Within that range, you can play courses like La Cañada, Almenara, La Hacienda Links, San Roque (New and Old), Real Club Sotogrande, La Reserva Sotogrande, Finca Cortesín, and Real Club Valderrama. For a golf trip where you plan to play 4, 5, or more rounds, having all the courses nearby is certainly an important element to consider. There's no need to drive for hours to and from the courses. This allows you to return to the hotel or house and relax for a while, use the pool, rest, and why not, do some sightseeing in the area.

It is a summer area for the European upper class, so there are excellent options very close to the courses. From luxury resorts to houses or mansions for up to 15 people.
5) Easy access from anywhere in the world
Spain, specifically Madrid, is a major gateway to all of Europe. It is easy to reach from anywhere in the world. And Marbella airport (Málaga), the closest to the Costa del Sol, is only an hour and fifteen minutes by flight from Madrid. This journey can also be made by train. Additionally, you can take the opportunity to visit Madrid on the same trip, another destination within Spain (like Barcelona, San Sebastián, Seville, etc.), or even any other point in Europe.
As you can see, the Costa del Sol in southern Spain is an excellent option for a golf trip with friends, couples, or even family. It has everything to make a golf trip spectacular!
