Córdoba, capital of Argentine golf

Wegolf 04 Apr 2020

From traditional to modern courses, including works by great designers and even PGA Tour venues. A destination for all tastes.

Córdoba brings together more than 10 percent of the registered golfers in Argentina and has more than 40 golf courses, most of them 18-hole layouts. These figures clearly reflect the importance of the sport in this province, which is a driving force behind the development of golf in the country.

The variety of terrains, climates, and course designs make Córdoba a very attractive destination for golfers from different parts of Argentina and even South America. In fact, the PGA Tour Latinoamérica has been visiting the province since 2013 for the Abierto del Centro. Córdoba Golf Club is the course that has hosted the event the most times since the circuit was created in 2012.

One of the great qualities Córdoba has as a golf destination, in addition to its wide range of courses, is that it is possible to play all year round.

Wegolf has been organizing the Córdoba Open since 2017 so that golfers from other regions of the country can discover the capital of Argentine golf. A three-day, three-night trip to enjoy the beauty of the province and play some of its best courses.

Córdoba Golf Club

At the entrance to the city of Villa Allende, there is a statue of a golfer swinging. This reflects the importance of our sport in this small city of about 10,000 inhabitants. Golf is breathed here like nowhere else in Argentina. It is unprecedented. It is comparable—saving the differences—to St. Andrews in Scotland. Everyone talks, knows, and has an opinion about this discipline. And they have good reason.

Córdoba Golf Club is the cradle of champions. Here Ángel “Pato” Cabrera and Eduardo “Gato” Romero were born, raised, and developed as golfers. Both exported their game and succeeded in different parts of the world. Cabrera is a two-time Major winner and Romero has two victories in major championships on the PGA Tour Champions.

Córdoba Golf Club, also known as “Villa Allende,” is one of the best courses in the region. It has undergone some changes in recent years thanks to the advice of its great stars. Its maintenance is exemplary. CGC members have an enviable sense of belonging: they consider the club their second home.

El Terrón

Despite being the newest course in the province (opened in 2019), it is undoubtedly one of the best, with a fantastic design by Tom Weiskopf, winner of The Open in 1973. The driving range is unique in the region and offers the possibility to practice all aspects of the game. Most professional golfers from Córdoba train here during their off weeks.

Wegolf has an excellent relationship with the owners of this magnificent development, Grupo Tagle. The Tagle family’s connection with golf goes back many years. Manuel (father) was President of Córdoba Golf Club and an excellent amateur who represented the country in the Copa Los Andes. The same goes for his son Germán, currently one of the best amateurs in Argentina and multiple winner of the Abierto del Centro. Manuel (son) is Ángel Cabrera’s manager and has been with him in both of his U.S. Open and Masters victories. Andrés, President of Grupo Tagle, is in charge of the urban development project of El Terrón.

Last year we visited El Terrón for our traditional Córdoba Open, just weeks after the course opened: we were all impressed by the design, maintenance, and presentation level.

The par-4 14th, a hole that makes you hesitate from the tee whether to play it safe with an iron or take a risk with the driver to go for the green.

Estancia La Paz

One hour from Córdoba Capital, this former colonial estate that belonged to former Argentine president Julio Argentino Roca opened its golf course a few years ago. It is a project led by the design firm Bunge Golf. The greens are large and with significant undulation. An unusual feature in this region is the design of several of its bunkers, very deep in the style of Scottish links.

Potrerillo de Larreta

Just 45 minutes from downtown, in Alta Gracia, Potrerillo de Larreta Golf & Resort offers everything needed for a wonderful weekend. The course has the ideal balance between beauty and challenge. The par-3 7th is one of the most photographed holes in Argentina: water in front, a native area to the left, and although it is short, a poor shot can result in a high score.

The course has multiple tee options, making it enjoyable for all skill levels. The fairways are wide, but missing the drive can be costly. The greens have plenty of movement and are always in perfect condition.

For almost 10 years, Wegolf has been visiting Potrerillo de Larreta to host one of the events of the traditional National Mid-Amateur and Pre-Senior Ranking, building an excellent relationship with the resort, its staff, and the Zuberbühler family.

Wegolf visits Potrerillo de Larreta every year for one of the National Mid-Amateur and Pre-Senior Ranking events.

Valle del Golf:

Opened in 2012 and designed by the Nicklaus firm, Valle del Golf quickly positioned itself as one of the best courses in Argentina. It shares many characteristics with Pilará Country Club (also Nicklaus Design): wide fairways, bunker contours, and greens with plenty of movement.

Valle del Golf is one of the few Nicklaus Design courses in South America.

La Cumbre Golf Club:

A gem by architect Juan Dentone, who also designed Mar del Plata Golf Club and San Isidro Golf Club, La Cumbre is a course with significant elevation changes as it sits in a valley. Its most iconic hole is the par-3 12th, just 66 yards long. Another fantastic par-3 is the 16th.

It is a short course by modern standards, but it constantly tests players when they miss the green.

Finishing a round and sitting with friends on the clubhouse terrace overlooking the hills and the course is a dream scene.

The clubhouse at La Cumbre Golf Club is one of the most beautiful and classic in Argentina.

Jockey Club Córdoba:

Just 10 minutes from downtown, Jockey Club Córdoba features an 18-hole course designed by Emilio Serra. The course is excellently maintained and has hosted the Ángel Cabrera Classic. It also hosts annually one of the best amateur tournaments in Argentina, El Federal, which welcomes players from across the region.

The 18th hole at Jockey Club Córdoba is one of the best on the course.

Alta Gracia Golf Club:

It is the oldest golf club in the province of Córdoba, dating back to the 1930s. Originally a 9-hole course, it was expanded a few years ago to 18 holes in a project led by Bunge Golf. It is a course with significant movement due to the natural terrain.

Notable players such as Estanislao Goya and Andrés Schonbaum (father and son) have emerged from this club.

Alta Gracia Golf Club is a par-72 course that measures 7,100 yards from the back tees.

In addition to the Córdoba Open organized by Wegolf, this year we launched the Wegolf Tour Córdoba, played four days a week at Córdoba Golf Club, Potrerillo de Larreta, Valle del Golf, and Jockey Club. The circuit brings together golfers from the province who, through an annual ranking, have the opportunity to play in a National Final.

Wegolf has also scheduled three trips to Córdoba for the second half of 2020, between September and October. These are the best months of the year to play here, as the courses are green, daylight lasts longer, and the heat is not as intense as in summer. It is a unique opportunity to discover a province that lives and breathes golf like no other.
