18 Essential Facts You Need to Know About The Masters & Augusta
1. What is The Masters?
The Masters is the first “Major” of the year, played over four rounds, 72 holes, stroke play. (If there is a tie after 72, there is a sudden-death playoff starting on the 18th hole, then moving to the 10th if necessary).

2. When did it start?
The first edition was in 1934 and was called the “Augusta National Invitation Tournament” by Bobby Jones. It kept this name until 1939.

3. When is it played?
Since 1940, it has been played during the first week of April, with the exception of 2020 due to the pandemic.
4. Where is it played?
The Masters is the only Major that repeats its course every year: Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
5. Why is it called “The Masters”?
Co-founder Clifford Roberts suggested the name, but Bobby Jones initially thought it was too “presumptuous.” Roberts eventually won out.

9. About the Course
It is a par 72, 7,475-yard course opened in 1932 on an old nursery called “Fruitland Nurseries.” It was designed by Bobby Jones and Alister MacKenzie.

Each hole at ANGC is named after a flower, such as Magnolia, Azalea, and Tea Olive.

A large check, a replica of the Masters trophy, a gold medal, and the famous Green Jacket.
