North Carolina

The Cradle of golf in the United States

Destination

The cradle of golf in the US.In the state of North Carolina there is a great variety in its topography: sandy soil, big terrain level changes, lakes, rivers, woods, planes ... they have it all! It's no coincidence that the great golf architect Donald Ross (Royal Dornoch) chose this place to stay in 1899, where he designed some of the best courses in the country, which are still very much relevant: Pinehurst, Pine Needles, Mid Pines, Southern Pines, Seminole, Aronimink, East Lake, Augusta CC, Oak Hill, etc.

Golf

There is a huge variety of courses, many options, and many very close to each other. A great option is to play at Pinehurst, Pine Needles, Mid Pines and Southern Pines, all within a 10-minute drive of each other

Pinehurst #2

  • The Pinehurst Resort masterpiece has hosted the US Open, the US Women's Open Championship in 2014, and the Ryder Cup in 1951. This course is emblematic for its complicated, mostly convex and undulating greens, recognized as the most complex in the world. To the point that only a small portion of its surface contains the approaches, while in the rest the ball will run until it leaves the green. Due to this particularity, it requires great handling of "aproach and putt" and local caddies are so important.

Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club

Built by Donald Ross in 1928 and 4 times host of The Women´s Womens Open provided generous fairways and challenging green sites. There are strong elevation changes throughout the course yet is very walkable. Wayward shots will likely find a bed of pine needles to rest on. Like most Ross courses, the greatness of Pine Needles is in the subtleties of the course as it lies across the natural terrain rather than trying to dominate it.

Tobacco Road Golf Club

Where to begin describing Tobacco Road … One thing is certain: you´ve never played a course like this before. Designed by Mike Strantz and open since 1998, this is a golf course that quickly became well-known because of it´s unique features. Very ondulated, several blind shots, 90-degree dog-legs, short holes, long holes, big greens with distinct platforms. On a good day, you can definetly score well here. On a bad day, it can be really tough.

Southern Pines Golf Club

Obviously Pinehurst No. 2 draws most of the attention from Ross historians wandering North Carolina, but it was not actually the first nine created by the iconic architect in the state. Although the front nine at Pinehurst was indeed Ross’s first design, he actually completed the full 18 at Southern Pines a year before completing the full route at No. 2. Southern Pines is not a long course but is tougher than the yardage due to many elevation changes and tricky greenside surroundings. This is an extremely fun course where golfers of all ability will be able to enjoy it.

Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club

Located in the cradle of American golf, this Donald Ross gem still challenges players but does so through a series of risk/reward opportunities that make Mid Pines the kind of course you can enjoy over and over again.

Other recommended golf courses

Firethorne (Charlotte), TPC at Piper Glen (Charlotte), Talamore, Pinewild

Time to book

You require quite a lot of anticipation, as these resorts are in high demand from golfers all over the world. Especially Pinehurst.. We suggest making reservations at least 6 months in advance to be able to find availability.

When to travel

When to travel

It's ideal to avoid peak winter and peak summer, mainly due to the temperatures (even though they´re not extreme temperatures). But it's a great destination to go from March to June, and from September to November.
