Description

In 1889 George Baillie created the initial holes of this golf course, which then Tom Morris in 1890 and Harry Colt in 1908 improved, to what today is one of the finest and most spectacular golf courses in the world. Located in Newcastle, just a few feet away from the Slieve Donard Hotel, Royal County Down is a true gem that should be played at least once in a lifetime. A spectacular golf course, very hard, but fun to play, a wide variety of golf holes and with perfect maintenance. The Club House is pure tradition with more than 100 years of history.

Signature Hole

The 9th hole, a par 4 with 483 yards from the back tees. A visual spectacle and a golf challenge. The back tee is 250 yards away from a 90 feet drop to the fairway (which you can´t see from the tee). And before you walk down the dunes, the views of the Slieve Donard Hotel and the Mourne Mountains are impressive.

Wegolf Insider Tip

We were lucky enough to play here in August of 2014 during a trip we organized for 24 golfers from Argentina, and where this was the final round. We were very impressed with the golf course, its maintenance, the club, the kindness of the people. We believe that if this course were located in the US, it would be ranked as #1 in the world. This is where Gmac and Rory usually play when in Ireland. You can even find a photograph of them playing here, bags on their sholders, just a few days after McDowell won the US Open in 2010.

The good, The Bad

All of it. The golf course. The club. The proshop. The maintenance. The tradition. A true paradise for a golf fan.
Hard to find anything bad to say about this place. Perhaps we should mention that the weather can be tough at times.
