Description
Birkdale was established in 1889 but extensively redesigned in 1922 to create the current layout, which winds its way through the sand dunes towering over each of the fairways. Since first hosting The Open in 1954, the course has been the most regular venue for the Championship other than St Andrews. Originally a 9 hole course designed by George Low. Others who later collaborated include JH Taylor y FW Hawtree. It was George VI of England in 1951 who granted the title of Royal, as this club was previously simple called "The Birkdale".
Signature Hole
Hole 12, a 183 yard par 3, a masterpiece just by the sea, although separated by huge dunes that prevent you from actually seeing the water. A very well protected green, with rough, bunkers and an elevated green. Missing the green on any side will require creativity and skill to save par.
Wegolf Insider Tip
Typical club house of a Royal course, a lot of tradition and we suggest you take the time to walk around and look at the trophy cabinets. And ont he first tee, right by the sea, you know what you will get: a challenging course, between dunes, full of history. But playable and fun to play.
