Description
Bayonet and Black Horse re-opened in December 2008 following a $13 million+ renovation by the Bates Golf Design Group (Gene Bates). Both courses underwent substantial changes, rerouting and redesign to allow incredible views of the Pacific Ocean. Both were awarded "Best Redesigns" in Golf Digest 2009. Bayonet (narrower) is considered one of the toughest on the Monterey Peninsula. Black Horse has better scenic views than its neighbor. The par 3 of 15 is the most visible face of its renovation and one of the best holes of the new layout.
Signature Hole
The 14th hole, par 4 of 398 yards (former hole 15) called “Cardiac Hill” due to its demanding climb of almost 30 meters to the green used to be a dog leg before the renovation and now it is rather straight, with cross bunkers of both sides, it is one of the most visually spectacular holes in the complex
Wegolf Insider Tip
When the wind blows at Black Horse, the course shows just how tough this 2012 PGA Club Championship venue can play. It may look helpless, but every missed shot comes at a price. 1 is a friendly par 5 to start with, but 2-6 can add up to a lot of shots. The 9th is one of the best holes, but the 12-13-14 string offers the best 3, especially the picturesque and very difficult 14th. Although they are not as well known on the West Coast, they are up there with the best that one can wait.
