Destination
St Andrews is undoubtedly the golf capital of the world, and it is a living testimony of the strong bond between golf and Scotland. It started as an ancestral hobby practiced in the useless lands by the sea, and thereafter became popular amongst locals. Today golf is part of the pride and soul of the town; nowhere on earth will you experience what happens at St Andrews. Golfers stroll in its streets with clubs as cars would do in any major capital city. The most famous course in the world is here, around the corner for locals, mesmerizing golfers from all over the world.

Golf
The courses where golf was born and excellent modern jewels.
St Andrews Links - Old Course
- Golf was born here. It is the oldest and most traditional field in the world, home of the R&A and every 5 years it hosts “The Open”. Located in the heart of the town, it is a public place where residents and visitors constantly walk, and stop to take photos on the famous "swilcan bridge" of the 18th.
- Its layout is characterized by a "natural" ground movement that is unique and impossible to imitate and a perfect floor from tee to green. Very playable for all levels of golfer, its design (which has many huge double greens) has been studied, and has inspired the best designers in history.
The Carnoustie Championship Golf Links
- Considered the most difficult stop at The Open Rota, it is an extreme challenge from 1 to 18, and from tee to green. It is a route that demands concentration and a lot of patience, because disaster is always lurking (just remember Van de Velde in 1999).
- It is a typical Scottish links despite the fact that the sea is not visible (it is 500m away), and it has the most difficult finish (16-17-18) in the British Isles. Its 18th hole, crossed by the meandering Barry Burn, with a headwind, has driven the best pros in history crazy.
Kingsbarns Golf Links
- This modern course is a Kyle Phillips masterpiece and considered one of the best links courses in the world. On an impressive plot of land that constantly overlooks the sea and the bay of St. Andrews, the club offers all the facilities at a 5-star level.
- It is a very playable course for everyone from the right tee, and it features lots of creative shots that make it a lot of fun, especially its 4 par 3s for beauty and challenge. It has hosted the Alfred Dunhill Championship.
St Andrews Links - New Course
- The New Course, known as the “oldest new course in the world”, was opened in 1895 and designed by the great Old Tom Morris. Its layout is extraordinary, more difficult than its brother "Old" and its layout -according to the old tradition- goes away in the first 9 holes, to then start the "return home". Overshadowed by its more famous sibling, if it were located anywhere else in the country it would surely host The Open.
Dumbarnie Golf Links
The contemporary design by Clive Clark features panoramic views of the Bay of Forth, holes that call for strategic decisions, and a lot of variety. The course, laid out on a flat surface, recreates dunes, undulations, and elevation changes to add diversity to the design and give the impression that it has always been there. Wide fairways, greens with plenty of movement, and bunkers for all tastes: pot bunkers, waste areas, and others of irregular shape.
Other recommended golf courses
Castle, Lundin, Duke´s, Ellie, Jubilee, Ladybank, Torrance, Kittocks, and Eden.
Other things to do
Welcome to the land of Harry Potter: the beautiful and picturesque St Andrews is a wonderful town to explore. The Home of Golf is also home to collection of historic sights to see, excellent shopping, fine dining and of course famous pubs. Visit its cemetery, walk through its narrow stone streets and visit its famous university (one of the oldest in the world). In addition, you may want to take a day trip to visit Crail, the adjoining fishing village that offers very good cuisine.
Planning
Where to stay
Staying in the village is the best way to live the full St Andrews experience. Choose from mansions or houses on the outskirts, hotels on the Old Course (like The Old Course Hotel and The Macdonald Rusacks Hote), hotels a few miles away like the Farimont St Andrews, or consider any of the dozen bed & breakfasts in town.
Time to book
Wegolf is the only AUTHORISED PROVIDER in South America of the Old Course St. Andrews. We recommend contacting a WeGolf expert to learn about playing there with 12 months in advance in order to guarantee tee time at the Old Course.
When to travel
The best time to travel is from May to early October, keeping an eye on the local championship calendar. Outside of these dates the weather is very harsh.
